As part of improvement works just north of Parkend crossing, the Permanent Way team have started a 3 week project to remove the old north head shunt and ease the curve into the main point work.

Earlier in the year the connection to the siding was removed in preparation for this work.

Rob watches on as Adam uses our RRV to remove the old sleepers, some of which had seen better days. The tool in use on the RRV was also used to lift the rails clear.

Again Rob watches on and directs me as I take my turn in the RRV. Having cleared the rest of the point work and sleepers it was time to remove the old ballast and grade the bed for the replacement sleepers.

Of interest in the above photograph, Rob is clearing some blocks which we believe were part of the old signalling equipment, possibly the base of a compensator.

Work continues over the next 2 weeks with the slewing of the track on the left side in above picture to ease the curve into the runround point and eventually our Up approach to platform 1.
